Now that you have established your basics of Phonics, it is time you are exposed to Phonemic Awareness. (though if you are not exposed to Phonics, here’s an article from our site to kickstart!)
While Phonics are used to teach children how to read and write, which directly links them to identifying sounds in words & the symbols used to represent them, Phonemic Awareness is slightly different as the name suggests.
Reading words and pages in a book or article should be second nature to an adult, but what about a child? Or simply put, have you ever gotten frustrated when you did not know how to pronounce an unknown word? Well, that’s where Phonemic Awareness comes in. Simply put, it refers to the specific ability to pronounce words the way they were meant to be spoken.
Furthermore, since Phonemic Awareness only focuses on oral sounds, children need not know the full alphabet to be able to develop their phonemic skills. That way, they could learn the alphabet on the go, allowing children to expand their literacy skills like a building block.
Altogether, Phonemic Awareness is essential to the process of learning to read, also known as, Phonemic Reading.
With the above information given from a parent’s view, worry-free days are ensured for your child to be taught well! In other words, the best combination one can get! So, there you have it, folks, that’s a wrap for today!
