One question that every new parent may ask is “What is Phonics?”. Well, by definition, phonics is a method of teaching people to read by correlating sounds with symbols in an alphabetic writing system. Put it in layman’s terms, Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write.
First of all, Phonics is essential to help children hear, identify, and use different sounds that differentiate one word from another in the English language. More importantly, one would need to identify which type of Phonics would best suit your child.
As such, the following types of Phonics would be advantageous for you to know or learn more about:
Synthetic Phonics: It focuses on specific instruction of syllables, combining them to form words. It is also the most direct and structured method of phonics. Overall, this method would be the default mode of phonics in various countries.
Analytic Phonics: This type of phonics focuses on (usually) familiar words and thereby breaking down these words to identify phonemes.
Analogy Phonics: An approach to phonics that relies on using groups of analogous (similar) words to build a child’s reading vocabulary.
Embedded Phonics: Focuses on teaching phonics in authentic contexts. Lessons begin with a teacher reading a book and identifying teachable moments.
With that, you have officially learnt the “baby steps” of Phonics!
From here on, one can be further exposed to such similar or other phonics materials that would enable a parent and more importantly, your child to plot the next few steps of their life!
